Summer Sings His Halcyon Song

The Feast of Acheloüs by Peter Paul Reubens

The Feast of Acheloüs by Peter Paul Reubens

Summer is in full and unnatural swing here in Spokane. The heat dome dominating most of the west coast is causing record breaking highs. For those who know me, heat and I do not get along. I become lethargic and unfocused. Still Summer means a certain amount of freedom for teachers and school children and in that I take delight. So, in honor of the start of Summer, here is a poem from my debut collection, The Green Man.

The Sun grows hot and the days grow long,
And the days are filled with wondrous light,
As Summer sings his halcyon song.

All is well, there is no more wrong,
For the old ills have been set to rights,
As the Sun grows hot and the days grow long.

Summer makes us all belong,
To his Kingdom of the Summer Sunlight,
As he sings his halcyon song.

He strikes upon the festal gong,
And give up ruling by his might,
As the Sun grows hot and the days grow long.

He says that he will not prolong
Our waiting anymore this night,
As he sings his halcyon song.

For the peace for which we long,
He gives it up without a fight,
As the Sun grows hot and the days grow long,
And Summer sings his halcyon song.
